Applying technology to supply chains: Kuehne+Nagel opens a Tech Hub in Porto

Applying technology to supply chains: Kuehne+Nagel opens a Tech Hub in Porto
ECO · 09 Dec 2022

With more than 200 jobs for highly skilled software engineers in Porto, the new hub contributes to Kuehne+Nagel’s goal of accelerating digital technologies for its global customers.

As one of the world's leading logistics companies, Kuehne+Nagel has opened a new IT competence centre in Portugal. Kuehne+Nagel’s Porto IT Hub contributes significantly to the company's goal of accelerating digital technologies for its global customers. It focuses on the development of new mission-critical products, e-solutions and new digital services. This will advance Kuehne+Nagel’s digital core logistics processes with more efficiency through standardisation and automation.

Kuehne+Nagel plans to hire more than 200 highly skilled software engineers in Porto by end of 2023. Porto is home to a vibrant international tech scene, new startups and development labs with highly skilled technology professionals from the country and abroad. Internationally recognised events such as the annually held Web Summit, confirm Portugal’s leading position in the tech sector.

The new home of this technology hub opens its doors on 6 December and will be located in Porto's city centre, in Marquês, more specifically in Rua Latino Coelho. The building has two floors reserved for Kuehne+Nagel in a modern and avant-garde environment that will host the day-to-day life of our talents.

The investment in hybrid work is presented as one of the factors to convince people to join the Swiss-German company and broaden the recruitment scale: people from all over the country can work for Kuehnel+Nagel as long as they show up a few times a month at the Porto office.

"We are a remote work-friendly company. We favour flexibility and we feel that people are looking for that. We recommend that people come to the office four times a month. If people wish, they can come more often. Otherwise, just come at least once a month." To try and convince employees to work at the Port once in a while, the company has created differentiated spaces on the two occupied floors. The idea is that coming to the office is equal to or better than working remotely.

Martin Kolbe, CIO and Member of the Management Board of Kuehne+Nagel International AG, says: "The new IT Hub is ideally timed to accelerate the roll out of our digital master plan. Here in Porto, we offer a fascinating and international working environment in the world of logistics for many different talents in IT.”

Porto is the third technology centre of the Swiss-German company, along with Hamburg (Germany) and Tallinn (Estonia). "Our office in Porto came to accelerate the digital transformation of our company and the logistics market. It came to complement needs and will have the autonomy to lead some of the products that already exist", says Gonçalo Bastos de Sá. In the Invicta city, "technological products will be built to facilitate the transport of goods by air and sea, warehouse and order management".

"We came to stay. Porto is a great place to be! Along with this vibrant an energetic atmosphere, our Centre has been designed to offer to our talents an exciting collaborative working place, allowing all our employees to interact with multi-disciplinary teams located all over the world.", says Gonçalo Bastos Sá, Head of IT Center for Porto.
