Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport distinguished as the best in Europe
Porto. · 06 Jul 2022
The Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport was distinguished with the "Best European Airport 2022" award in its category of 10-25 million passengers by the Airport Council International (ACI), ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal said in a statement.

This is the first time that Porto Airport has been distinguished as Best European Airport 2022 by ACI Europe, the international organisation of airports, which highlighted the recovery of activity after the pandemic crisis, the quality of service and the actions implemented within the sustainability contained in the environmental commitment of VINCI Airports.

During such a challenging period for the entire aviation sector, the infrastructure was improved with the extension of the taxiway, innovative solutions were developed and implemented, and sustainability commitments were reinforced, as set out in VINCI Airports' environmental strategy.

The focus on the development of routes has made it possible to achieve connectivity figures in 2022 that are higher than in 2019, along with the attractiveness of the northern region, which has allowed very positive results to be achieved in terms of traffic recovery and increased connectivity. According to the statement, Porto Airport has already surpassed the level of connectivity seen in the summer of 2019, with 100 regular routes now available (in 2019, there were 99).

In terms of sustainable projects, ACI Europe highlights the creation of the Stakeholders' Forum for Global Carbon Management, the projects to reuse water (from emergency vehicles and passengers' bottles, for irrigation and washing at airports), the reduction of the water footprint and the innovative waste sorting system with a dedicated plant at the airport.

The evaluation criteria for the awards this year were mainly related to the quality of service and the implementation of measures during the pandemic crisis in the operational, health and safety, commercial management areas, in the context of the airport's sustainability strategy and its financial recovery.

Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport has been recurrently awarded by ASQ ACI (Airport Service Quality), receiving different distinctions in top positions over the last 15 years.
