Mercadona opens first store in Porto
The supermarket chain, Mercadona, which already has 1,100 Portuguese employees, took another step towards the goal of closing the year with 10 establishments in the country by opening the first store in Porto. The city that was chosen by the Spanish retailer in 2016 to locate the central offices and headquarters for Irmãdona, the society created by Mercadona in Portuguese lands.
The establishment, whose opening has generated 85 new open-ended jobs from day one, has a sales area of 1,900 m2 and 150 parking spaces.
Since 2016, in Greater Porto, Mercadona, has invested 260 million euros in its expansion (60 of which last year). The Spanish company already had stores in Vila Nova de Gaia, Matosinhos, Maia and Gondomar, as well as Barcelos. The Spanish food retailer's plans point to between 150 and 200 stores in Portugal, 70 of which will be located in the north, where the investment began.
