Mercan opens Hotel Casa da Companhia in downtown Porto
(re)Portugal · 02 Jul 2021

The new luxury unit of the Mercan group in Porto, the Casa da Companhia hotel, opens on July 5th.

The hotel is located on Rua das Flores and is the result of the rehabilitation and restoration of a historic building from the 18th century, located in an area classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. The architectural project respected the lines of the building, where Real Companhia Velha was located, one of the oldest companies producing Port Wine.

This new five-star boutique hotel has 40 rooms, 10 of which are suites, in addition to an outdoor pool overlooking the Cathedral, a 160 square meter wellness area with a heated indoor pool, gym, treatment room, sauna, and Turkish bath. It also has a restaurant and bar with direct access to Rua das Flores, with a special focus on traditional Portuguese cuisine, with Mediterranean and international influence.

Jordi Vilanova, vice president of the Mercan group, believes that this "is a work that the Mercan Group is very proud of, for the care that was taken in the rehabilitation of a building that is part of the history of this city and that is now gaining a new life, thanks to the interest of international investors. The Casa da Companhia honors, from the outset, Porto's tradition through its architecture and connection to the Port wine that has always marked the city”.

He adds that this "is an investment that allows us to leverage other projects and promote the offer of jobs, as it will ensure 23 direct jobs, in addition to indirect ones that result from partnerships with local suppliers”.

In turn, Filipe Silva, president of Ace Hospitality Management, the company responsible for managing the hotel, also comments in a statement that "Casa da Companhia is more than a hotel, it is a historic landmark in the city of Porto. Despite the current fluctuation in the tourist flow due to the pandemic, Porto continues to be a highly desired and sought-after destination, and its hotel offer needs to be strengthened and diversified”. It highlights "the quality and elegance of the hotel's various spaces”, which "are absolutely aligned with excellent service to our guests. We are going to work towards positioning Casa da Companhia as another reference in the hotel market in the city of Porto”.
