The city of Porto, which had been losing population for several years, is reversing this trend, largely thanks to migratory flows over the past decade.

Between 2013 and 2023, Porto's population grew by 6.1%, according to a report presented last month at the Municipal Economic Council, based on data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) and Eurostat. According to this data, Porto had 234,453 residents in 2013. Ten years later, this number increased to 248,769 residents, representing a 6.11% growth.

In 2023, over 62% of Porto’s residents were between 14 and 65 years old, 26% were above 65, and 12% were under 14. These figures align with data analyzing the city’s foreign population, which shows a 210.8% increase between 2012 and 2022.

In 2022, Porto had 23,312 foreign residents, a 23.1% increase compared to 2021. During this period, the largest growth came from Mozambican residents (53.1%), followed by citizens from India (42.5%), Angola (32.5%), Brazil (27.3%), and Italy (11.7%).

"We must recognize that if Porto is now a more cosmopolitan city, it must treat these people as if they were locals. They are part of the city’s economic and social fabric and, from the moment they live here, they are just like us," said Porto's Mayor, Rui Moreira.
