15 Oct 2021

Built in the 40's and the emblematic house of Correios de Portugal [Portuguese post office] in Porto, Palácio dos Correios was renovated to receive offices and shops. This rehabilitation and reconstruction work was now distinguished in the third edition of Prémios do Imobilário [Real Estate Awards], held by Expresso and SIC Notícias.

Promoted by the Ferreira Group, the intervention, which won in the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction – Office category, included the creation of 20 thousand square meters of commercial and office spaces, in addition to the modernization of the building and its surroundings. The architecture project was made by Ginestal Machado, from APEL, while the engineering was in charge of Pedro Freitas.

The building, an original work by the architect Carlos Ramos, a major figure in Porto's modernist architecture, is where companies such as Critical Techworks, Bold or the inter-municipal entity Área Metropolitana do Porto currently work. The atrium was recently named after the sculptor José Rodrigues, bearing at the entrance "Salomé", a female bust in bronze.

At the end of July, CTT returned home and opened a completely renovated store "based on an innovative approach to customer relations".

36 projects competed in this edition of Prémios do Imobiliário, "an initiative that aims to reward the best works in this sector in 2020", in the categories of best building in the areas of housing, tourism and offices; rehabilitation and reconstruction in the areas of housing, offices, commerce, and public space or cultural heritage; interior architecture in the areas of housing, offices and tourism; sustainability in the areas of sustainable construction/architecture, innovation in mediation and the new category of public space related to green spaces and urbanism.

The intervention in the housing building Emporium, a building in Rua de Sá da Bandeira which dates from 1948, was also awarded by the competition jury with an honorable mention.
