Porto Dominates Patent Registrations in Portugal
History is made from the past, and from the present the figures that make Porto one of Portugal's most economically vibrant cities. For historian Joel Cleto, “Porto couldn't have been born anywhere else”, for the Councillor for the Economy, Employment and Entrepreneurship, today, “the city can be a lever, a motivating factor for the economy to flourish here”. All this was discussed at the “Inspiring Portugal” conference, which took place this Tuesday at Pólo Zero.
Under the theme "Internationalization", Ricardo Valente highlighted, in the opening session, that "the City Council does not have a steering role, it will not command what the economy wants". In this sense, he said, "the great achievement was the enormous re-transformation that the city underwent, from an economic point of view”.
The City Councilor recalled that Porto is currently the city in the country with the highest number of patents and startups. "Today, we have companies that already export 20% of what they produce. In 2013, their export value was less than 4%. We multiplied the level of exports by five," he said.
Exports in this region represent 3 billion euros in turnover. Close to 2800 companies are exporters, "50% of which have a weight of exports in their turnover greater than 70%". "We have a business fabric in the city that is already imminently exporting", he added.
"Today we have a thriving economy, we create wealth. The country has to stop being against companies, against success, pursue prosperity", concluded the City Councillor for Economy, Employment and Entrepreneurship.
