Portuguese technology transforms hybrids into electrics

Portuguese technology transforms hybrids into electrics
Dinheiro Vivo · 13 Jul 2021

There is Portuguese technology that automatically transforms hybrid cars into electric cars in three cities. Lisbon, Porto, and Braga are the first three locations to benefit from the solution created by Critical Software in a consortium with BMW.

The eDriveZones solution allows hybrids with an external charging socket (plug-in) to automatically switch to electric mode in the zero or low emission zones of the center of Lisbon, Porto and Braga.

In the initial phase, the tool is available for models 330e, 745e, X5 xDrive45e and 530e, according to the statement.

Since 2018, Critical Software and BMW have been working together in Portugal, through the Critical TechWorks consortium. There are more than 1000 people working in this entity, with offices in Porto. In 2021 alone, 400 people are being hired.

Among the tools developed in the last three years, a highlight is the system that allows the driver to program the car's temperature before entering it and the charging plan for electric cars.
