The creation of companies in Porto reaches record-breaking numbers and the city leads the country in terms of startups
26 Feb 2017
In 2015, 1,722 companies were created in the city of Porto, 139 of which are industrial and 1,585 are services companies. These figures are included in the annual statistics of Statistics Portugal (INE, in Portuguese) and are aggregated in a study by Pordata, a database by António Manuel dos Santos Foundation. These figures (data for 2016 are yet to be included) show a 30% growth in relation to 2012.

The official statistics of the country show, moreover, that these figures represent a record for all the years presented in the study (1997, 2001 and from 2009 to 2015). In 2001, the number of companies created in Porto was, according to the same report, 1,389, that is higher than in 2012, before the current municipal executive took office. From there on the number of companies set up in the city skyrocketed.

According to another recent study, entitled "Portugal Rising: Mapping ICT Scaleups", published by the Startup Europe Partnership (SEP) together with CrESIT, with the support of Microsoft Portugal and the Activate Portugal Startups initiative, Porto ranks as the fastest moving startup city in Portugal, representing 36% of the ecosystem in the country.
