UCP's School of Biotechnology and Biorbis announce a partnership to transform Portugal into a biomolecule hub

This program expects an initial private investment of 3 million, with a potential increase of 23 million over the next 5 years, in the research and innovation project that seeks to develop the next generation of safe, sustainable, and high-value biomolecules.

UCP's School of Biotechnology and Biorbis announce a partnership to transform Portugal into a biomolecule hub

Biorbis is an international company, that is majority-owned by Guatemala's leading sugar cane producer and Latin America's top 5 sugar producers - IMSA - Ingenio Magdalena.

"This 5-year collaboration will begin with the integration of 40 researchers to develop a private research project - CIRCULAS - which will be integrated into the facilities of the Center for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry of the Faculty of Biotechnology," says Manuela Pintado, director of the CBQF Research Center - Center for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry.

"Biorbis will market new sustainable molecules from Portugal resulting from this partnership, where 40 researchers will actively seek out new sources and processes to develop sustainable, high-value molecules," says Jorge Leal, co-founder and co-director of Biorbis. "Through this partnership, which is based on the principles of the circular economy and is aligned with the Green Deal, we intend to transform Portugal into a hub for the development of new biomolecules, to be marketed for use in plant, animal, and human nutrition," adds John Melo, also co-founder and co-director of Biorbis.

Manuela Pintado explains that the project seeks "the discovery, development, and commercialization of new biomolecules". She adds that this project seeks to explore, "the economic valorization of sub-products from various sources to obtain new biomolecules and optimizing fermentation to increase their production efficiency."

The signing of the agreement between the Universidade Católica and Biorbis will take place on November 20, at 11 a.m., in the Auditorium Arménio Miranda, at the Faculty of Biotechnology of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
