University of Porto among the best in the world

For the tenth consecutive year, the Shanghai ranking placed the University of Porto, among the 400 best universities in the world.

After being ranked among the top 100 universities in the world in four different areas (Food Science and Technology, Veterinary, Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering), in an analysis that evaluated more than 4 thousand establishments, the University of Porto stands out among the 301 and 400 best educational institutions worldwide by the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2020, by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy.

The oldest and one of the most prestigious international rankings in higher education awarded the university with a score of 45.8 (higher than last year), with regard to the number of publications indexed in the Social Sciences Citation Index 2019 of the Web of Science. In the number of citations per article, U.Porto acquired 10.2 points and 19.1 in the university's overall performance per teacher.

In an assessment that included more than 2000 higher education institutions from around the world, the analysis was based on six criteria that assess the quality of education, of teachers, scientific production and per capita production.

In the national panorama, the ranking highlighted five more Portuguese universities: the University of Lisbon, integrating the group of 151-200 institutions worldwide; the University of Minho, between 401 and 500; the Universities of Aveiro and Coimbra, in the group of 501-600; and NOVA University Lisbon, between the 601 and 700 best in the world. 

For the 18th consecutive year, Harvard University won the first place on the podium in the ranking, followed by the universities of Stanford (USA), Cambridge (United Kingdom), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) and Berkeley (USA).
