University of Porto is the most entrepreneurial in 2023

According to Startup Portugal's "Portugal's Entrepreneurial University Ranking 2023", there are at least 1,650 alumni founders in 10 universities in Portugal, an increase of 21.15% compared to a year ago.

The University of Porto is the university with the most entrepreneurs throughout the country in 2023, having overtaken University Nova from Lisbon, which fell to third place in Startup Portugal's "Portugal's Entrepreneurial University Ranking 2023", which presents the Portuguese universities with the most entrepreneurs among their alumni. The Portuguese Catholic University moves is the second with the most entrepreneurs.

According to the Startup Portugal study, there are at least 1,650 alumni founders in Portugal's top 10 universities, an increase of 21.15% compared to a year ago. "Last year we launched this ranking with the aim of spreading the word about university entrepreneurship and encouraging a growing adoption of innovative project development themes in their curriculum," explains António Dias Martins, executive director of Startup Portugal, quoted in a statement. "We are pleased to see the University of Porto making a positive evolution in the number of founders it is training and integrating into the market."

The ranking is based on data from Dealroom, a global intelligence data platform on startups, innovation, high-growth companies, and ecosystems, from which it was possible to conclude that there are at least 1,650 founders among the alumni of the top 10 universities in Portugal, which is 21.15% more than in the 2022 ranking.

 

Management, Law, Engineering, and Health are the main areas of study for founding students in Portuguese universities, according to the study. As for the predominant nationalities of international students, there is a greater incidence of Brazilian, Guinean, and Cape Verdean nationalities.

 

With 275 start-up founders among its alumni, the University of Porto tops the ranking of national universities with the most entrepreneurs, having moved up one position and overtaken University Nova from Lisbon in the lead. The Portuguese Catholic University moves up to second in the ranking, with a total of 263 founders among its alumni.
