Porto shortlisted for European Green Capital 2028
Recognition reinforces the city’s positioning as a sustainable and competitive hub for investment, with strong performance in water management, climate resilience, and integrated urban development.
Porto has been named one of five finalists for the European Green Capital 2028 award, further strengthening its position as a leading European city combining sustainability with economic competitiveness. The shortlist, announced by the European Commission, also includes Aalborg (Denmark), Bielsko-Biała (Poland), Košice (Slovakia), and Zaragoza (Spain). The award recognises cities that deliver high-quality urban environments through effective environmental governance, reduced pollution, and forward-looking sustainability strategies. From 27 eligible applications, Porto was identified as an "exemplary city”, standing out for its consistent performance across all areas of urban sustainability.
The European Commission highlighted Porto’s strong results in water management and climate adaptation, reflecting a decade of investment in resilient infrastructure, ecosystem restoration, and community engagement. This integrated approach aligns environmental priorities with economic development and quality of life—key factors in attracting international investment and talent. The evaluation, conducted by independent experts, spans areas such as air quality, biodiversity, circular economy, and climate action, reinforcing Porto’s ability to deliver scalable and future-oriented urban solutions.
Reaching the final stage brings increased international visibility and external validation of the city’s development model, supporting the attraction of investment, talent, and tourism. The winner will be announced on 8 October in Guimarães, where Porto will present its environmental vision, governance model, and strategy for delivering impact at scale.
